JJ Valaya's Gypsy-Inspired LFW Collection'll Make You Want To Travel Again

Day 1 of the FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week ended with a digital presentation from JJ Valaya. And after sequestering at home for close to 18 months now, these clothes became a vehicle for our wanderlust. To say that we transcended physical borders and entered a mystical land, one where Valaya’s multicultural clothes are a mainstay wouldn’t be a hyperbole. The designer proved that there are more ways than one to be a nomad, and imagination is at the crux of it all.

Rumeli, the name of Valaya’s festive 2021-22 collection, roughly translates to Land of the Romans, and is inspired by the Ottoman Empire. Much like the land they ruled, his clothes, too, were a melting pot of various influences. There were nuances of complex floral embroideries, whose origins can be traced back to the Turks of the Balkans, that made several appearances in the humongous borders of featherlight lehengas. They were juxtaposed with quintessentially Indian brocade fabrics in contrast hues. There were plenty of subtle nods to the '90s, too, but not before giving them the 2021-design treatment. Blouses with puff-sleeves made a comeback and so did halter silhouettes that were combined with our favourite trend, plunging necklines. Our favourite part, though, was the chevron capsule featuring a black maxi dress with a halter and no back, the abstract sari, and black and white lehengas that could moonlight as skirts and were modern enough to be worn with a shirt or a T-shirt if one wanted to.

The collection may be festive, but for brides seeking new-age options that don’t haemorrhage their style options were not in short supply. Just look toward the lehenga worn by Mrunal Thakur, Valaya’s showstopper, who played the role of a modern bride with the kind of vigour that made it hard for us to look away from her.

The gold gota patti that inundated the red outfit, the plunging neckline of the blouse, and the lehenga featuring intricately crafted peacocks are elements that make an outfit such a perfect choice for a modern bride. The fact that it can be worn with a belt is just a bonus.
