NGT holds Sri Sri Ravishankar's AOL responsible for Yamuna floodplains damage
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday held Sri Sri Ravishankar’s Art of Living Foundation responsible for the damage to the Yamuna floodplains caused during the World Culture Festival held in New Delhi in March last year. In its verdict, the tribunal also directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to restore the floodplains with the Rs 5 crore fine paid by the foundation last year. The DDA, under the supervision of an NGT expert committee, would be working towards restoring the area allotted for the festival.
The tribunal, however, did not impose any additional fines on the Art of Living Foundation, but if the restoration of the floodplains exceeds the Rs 5 crore bracket, then the additional amount will be recovered from the organisation. The NGT also did not impose any environment compensation on DDA, as they have already initiated setting up biodiversity parks along the Yamuna floodplains with their own expenditure. Meanwhile, the green tribunal refused to decide whether AOL was authorised to hold the festival on Yamuna floodplains, saying it’s beyond its jurisdiction.
