Surat:

Several students of a coaching centre had to jump off a multi-storey building in Gujarat's Surat after a fire broke out on Friday afternoon, news agency PTI reported.

The fire engulfed the third and fourth floor of a Taxshila Complex, officials said.

There was no confirmation about any injuries in the incident yet, they said.

Television footage showed students jumping off the third and fourth floors of the building.

A fire official said 19 fire engines and two hydraulic platforms were sent in to control the fire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted about the incident: "Extremely anguished by the fire tragedy in Surat. My thoughts are with bereaved families. May the injured recover quickly. Have asked the Gujarat Government and local authorities to provide all possible assistance to those affected."
