Coronavirus India News Live Updates: The Covid-19 tally in India on Friday inched closer towards the eight lakh mark after 26,507 fresh cases were reported within a span of 24 hours, taking the total to 7,93,802. The number of fatalities stood at 21,604, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. India is the third worst-hit nation, behind only the United States and Brazil.

Also, lockdown restrictions have been announced in Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Pune, amid a surge in the number of cases. Maharashtra continues to remain the worst-affected state with 2,30,599 cases including 9,667 deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu with 1,26,581 cases and Delhi at 1,07,051 cases.

Meanwhile, notwithstanding the ICMR’s ambitious timeline to produce a Covid vaccine, officials and scientists from CSIR, the Department of Science and Technology and Department of Biotechnology on Friday told a Parliament panel that no vaccine appears possible before early next year, it was learnt.

Globally, over 12 crore people have been infected with the virus and 5,56,383 have died. The World Health Organisation has formally acknowledged the possibility that the novel coronavirus can remain in the air in crowded indoor spaces, where “short-range aerosol transmission… cannot be ruled out”.
