Gully Boy song Azadi: Ranveer Singh and Co. demand freedom
Days before the release of Gully Boy, its makers launched one of the most hard-hitting tracks from the film’s album, “Azadi”. The song, featuring actors Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin and Siddhant Chaturvedi, demands freedom from corruption, injustice and discrimination.
The hook line of the song, “Azadi. Hum le ke rahenge, Azadi. Tum kuch bhi kar lo, Azadi…”, has been picked up from former JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar’s arousing speech after he was released from jail in 2016. Some even consider it as a demand for ‘azadi’ in Kashmir.

Talking to IANS about “Azadi”, composer Dub Sharma had said, “Azadi questions every corrupt and intolerant system. This song is about the unjust and unfair things all of us see around us every day.”
The song is crooned and composed by Divine and Dub Sharma.
In the Gully Boy music review, The Indian Express’ Suanshu Khurana noted, “Azadi! Hum le ke rahenge, Azadi! Tum kuch bhi kar lo, Azadi… In 2016, hours after his release from Delhi’s Tihar Jail, the then JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar concluded an invigorating address with these words, impressing upon his freedom of speech. Almost three years later, rapper Vivian Fernandes aka Divine and Dub Sharma have merged these lines from that popular speech on JNU grounds and spun a rambunctious and extended breakbeat to give us a caveat for the times. It moves ahead with Desh kaise hoga saaf, inki neeyat mein hai daag… is rapped along a synth and drum machine. It’s wild, it’s irreverent and extremely catchy and is one of the finest political pieces of music one has heard in a long time.”
Gully Boy’s other tracks like – “Apna Time Aayega”, “Asli Hip Hop” and “Mere Gully Mein” have also been creating ripples. The film brings street rap into Bollywood music for the first time.
Loosely based on the lives of rappers Divine and Naezy, Gully Boy turns the spotlight on Mumbai’s underground hip hop scene. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, it is set to release on February 14.
